Conch salad by the sea with a Kalik, award-winning fine dining in an historical mansion, burgers while watching the game, to mangoes freshly picked from the tree: the variety of culinary choices and settings offers something perfect for all tastes, budgets and occasions. While everything from French to Italian or Asian-fusion is available on the island, Bahamian cuisine offers a full cultural adventure.
Bahamian cuisine centers on the oceans’ bounty combining Spanish, West African and British tastes and styles. Conch (pronounced ‘konk’), Crawfish (rock lobster), Grouper, Red Snapper and crab are local favorites. Conch is a mollusk with firm white flesh that is prepared in a variety of ways including conch salad, conch fritters, cracked conch, and conch chowder. Other specialties include boiled fish and grits for breakfast, Bahamian stew fish, crawfish with peas ‘n’ rice and Johnny cake. For dessert, try fresh tropical fruit, guava duff, pineapple or coconut tart, and bread pudding. If you would like to take a full journey through Bahamian cuisine, ask us about the excellent food tours.
Catch of the day takes on a whole new meaning when you reel it in yourself. We have excellent fishing charters on island. Imagine Mahi Mahi on the grill with fresh ingredients from the market. Most of our rooms have fully equipped kitchens or arrangements can be made with our Chef at our own “Da Hot Spot” poolside. He will be happy to prepare your catch or bring his own that will make even the tallest fishing story look and taste good.
For the full cultural experience, sample our locally brewed beers: Kalik and Sands. Kalik is named after the sound of cowbells heard during the Junkanoo Festival. Rum is also an island favorite with the Bacardi plant operating on island for many years. Today you can visit the John Watling’s Distillery at the historic Buena Vista Estate and learn about the rum-making techniques and sample their award winning pale and amber rums fermented onsite and distilled from freshly pressed sugar cane molasses. Bahamian favorite cocktails include the Bahama Mama, featuring a mix of dark, light and coconut rum mixed with pineapple and orange juice, or try Sky Juice, a combination of gin, coconut milk and spices.
