Plait the Day Away

Sep 25, 2017

Calling all shopaholics! Buying gifts and souvenirs is one of the best parts of traveling, and if you are looking for something that is authentic to the Bahamian Islands, look no further than something made out of straw. Straw weaving is an old Bahamian craft done by plaiting strips of dried palm frond leaves found throughout the islands. There are many different types of plaits each with their own names that are used to make bags, baskets, hats, mats and even dolls all crafted by hand.

The Nassau Straw Market on Bay Street is World Famous for its wide selection of straw work and handmade Bahamian crafts. We also like The Cable Beach Pompey Market, which is a quieter venue if the bustling of the Bay St. location is a little overwhelming. Be sure to bargain, as part of the fun is haggling for the best price and getting the most bang for your buck — the vendors expect and even enjoy giving a little bite when purchasing their pieces.
